Ever sit down to make a card and end up staring at your supplies, completely stuck? That’s where a classic layout for a thank you card swoops in like a crafting superhero.
A layout (also called a sketch) is simply the framework of your card. A really flexible framework. Think of it like this. It’s the recipe to one of your favourite ooey gooey goodies…
You choose the ‘ingredients’ but rather than sugar, butter and flour, choose paper, stamps and embellishments! Then ‘bake it up’ into a card your friend or family member will love!
A bonus? You get to use the supplies you already own, in whatever colour or theme you want!
Why Card Layouts Save Time
Layouts eliminate the decisions you have to make as you’re putting together your design. No more wondering, “Should the sentiment go up top? Or should it go smack in the middle?” or “Where’s the best place for the main image?”
You already know all that stuff because you have a layout pic (download this one below)! All you do is swap in the papers and images you have on hand. That means less fussing and more creating. And let’s be honest, you want more of the fun part and less of the hassle, right?
This pear-themed thank you card is a perfect example. The rectangular focal panel layered onto patterned paper (but with a little twist) is a classic arrangement you can recreate again and again.
Another bonus? It’s super quick!
The Pears, With a Double Twist!
Normally, pears give us a cozy autumn feel. But who says they have to be fall-coloured? I pulled out Strawberry Slush, one of the new 2025-27 In Colors, and instantly the vibe changed from harvest-season to bright and playful. Add a hint of shimmer and a few sparkly gems, and suddenly this card feels fresh, modern and totally unexpected.
It’s proof that the same stamp can look completely different just by changing the colour palette.
Where’s the double twist, you ask?
Instead of using a full mat of the Designer Series Paper, get playful with only a half piece. It instantly changes the vibe, and leaves a little to the imagination!
What I Used
Our pears are from the Perfectly Pears stamps, new in July 2025. It’s ‘peared’ 😉 with the Perfectly Pears dies so cutting out the image is a breeze.
Then pop them up onto a ‘pear’ (sorry I can’t resist!) of detailed rectangles from the Textured Notes Dies. I love the different edges each of these dies has. With 8 rectangle dies, 7 nest perfectly inside each other and there’s one label to fit the longest sentiment in the stamp set. (Thank you, Stampin’ Up!)
How to Make This Idea Your Own
Want to adapt this layout for your own supplies? Here are a few ideas to get you going!
- Switch the paper. Replace the splattered pink background with a bold stripe or a subtle neutral. Same layout, brand-new feel.
- Change the image. Don’t have pears? Try flowers, leaves, snowflakes or even geometric shapes. This design works with practically anything.
- Play with colours. Go monochrome for a chic look, or mix complementary colours for more energy.
- Vary the sentiment. The “thank you” here could just as easily be “happy birthday” or “thinking of you.” Just try to keep the length within the first layer size.
- Don’t have a die cutting machine? Cut the rectangles and DSP with your paper trimmer!
Once you have the layout, the choices are just about endless!

A Little Extra Touch
Don’t forget the inside! A quick repeat of the stamped image (like the pears, lightly coloured) ties the whole card together and makes it feel like a complete gift. Coordinating the envelope with the same set of pears is another way to elevate your handmade cards with very little effort.
