Handmade Candy Corn Countdown Mini Take Out Boxes for Halloween

It’s the first in my spooky (well, not really spooky☺️) series!  Let’s make some adorable mini take out boxes for Halloween.  Fill ‘em up with sweet goodies, a hand-baked cookie or a little dollar store treat and your little ghosts will LUVH you to pieces.

There were tons of items in the new Holiday catalogue vying for top spot on “Jo’s First Preorder List” ☺️, but I think the Takeout Treats bundle won the day and was the VERY first thing I ordered.  And here’s why:

  • I love making and giving tiny treats.  And these are a perfect size.  To quote a famous little person, “not too big, not too small but JUUUUST right.”  Whether your treats are edible or not, there are millions of things you could fit in here!
  • Stamps and boxes to use all throughout the year.  You probably spotted Hallowe’en, Christmas and Valentine’s, but what about every birthday, congrats, wedding favours and any other celebration with little goodies?
  • The framelits include a tag, a banner, a heart, a star, a box peek cutout, the mistletoe and a label.  Even when I’m not using the takeout box, I can use those for all kinds of other projects.
  • Decorative stamps as well as sentiments.  Perfect for backgrounds and tiny touches which take your cards from lovely to LOVELY!
  • One box takes only a half sheet of cardstock.  Two adorably cute boxes for less than 30 cents?  Where else can you get a deal like that?
  • A pretty neat mix of font styles on the greetings.  And a good size too.  They won’t disappear with lighter inks and are easy to ink up with markers or stamp pads.  (HINT: there’s two different “for you”’s in there too.  Did you see them?)

How about a closer look?

I have to admit.  I hemmed and hawed about that bat punch.  Did I really need it?  How much would I use it?

But wanna know what the clincher was?

It fits right over top of the bat designs on the Toil and Trouble designer series paper!  So I compromised and didn’t get the Spooky Sweets stamp set (altho’ it sure is cute!) but did get the Spooky Bats punch.

Here’s a quick video to show you how I changed from plain Sparkle glimmer paper to spooky greyish black bats just like on this Boo card from last year.

Hot Tips’n Tricks

  • Use Tear & Tape adhesive for a more solid box.  Apply to box tabs and bottom BEFORE folding and burnishing along the score lines.
  • Stamp greeting with Granny Apple Green ink onto scrap of Whisper White cardstock, THEN cut it out with the label framelit.
  • Cut a piece of Gorgeous Grape mini striped ribbon about 6” long and pull out a thread on each end to fray it.  Trim as needed.
  • Glue to a piece of Granny Apple Green textured weave ribbon with a glue dot and attach both pieces onto a Gorgeous Grape circle.
  • Position dimensionals on the circle rather than the ribbon for the strongest adhesion of the greeting.
  • Punch holes in sides on box BEFORE folding closed.  Knot one end of a 10” piece black cord and thread through the hole from the INSIDE of the box.  Insert into the other side of the box from the outside in and pull through to tie a knot at the end.  Tug gently until the knot is at snugged up against the hole.
  • Two mini dimensionals placed one directly on top of the other gives added lift to the bat.  HINT: put on one dimensional, remove protective backing and place second dimensional right over top.  Adhere to box.
  • Bend box top back against the score line so it will stand up before attaching the second bat.

These Takeout Box thinlits will take the place of my retired Mini Treat bag (well, kinda sorta anyway).  Remember how sweet those were with the Painted Autumn paper last fall?   I’ve already got a plan for these boxes for my Thanksgiving table this year!

Did you get a chance to try the trick or treat bags from last week with the Seasonal Chums?  Be sure to check back next week for a full photo tutorial of another sweet treat item.  Until then, I’d love it if you’d take a minute to leave me a comment on how you’re liking this Handmade Candy Corn Countdown Mini Take Out Boxes for Halloween.
