How to Use Watercolor Pencils for Colouring Only!

Watercolor pencils. What a simple tool. Portable. Easy-to-use. And often overlooked.

Let’s see how they can add lots of OOOMPH! to your paper crafting.

Create YOUR OWN Colours Once You Know How to Use Watercolor Pencils

We think we need to always add a blender of some kind to activate the colour! An Aqua Painter. A spritzer. Or another of my faves, a Wink of Stella.  Not so. Look at the depth of colour you can achieve with the pencils alone.

How to Use Watercolor Pencils for GREAT Shading!

You just need a few tips to get started:

Jo’s TIPS for How to Use Watercolor Pencils for Colouring Only!

  1. start with your lightest colour first
  2. always lay down your colour LIGHTLY. Try not to add pressure as you’re colouring since you’ll immediately get a waxy buildup of dark colour
  3. gently swirl on your colour in a circular motion rather than colouring in short jerky lines
  4. select colours to complement each other and layer over top also using a swirling motion to build up colour

What colours did I use? Daffodil Delight first, then Pumpkin Pie, then Real Red to create my cute birthday cake.  The candle flame is Daffodil Delight.  The candle itself is Real Red.

  • the peep of Daffodil Delight gingham paper from behind the greeting banner adds tons of personality TIP: I notched my large greeting with my Paper Snips first.  Then I glued my piece of Daffodil Delight in behind and cut it to match.
  • both silver and black mini sequins bring on some bling
  • add some pizzazz to the background with the Dot To Dot embossing folder on a Real Red panel
