We’re talking black heat embossing + embossed coloured ink. And the best part? You can do both techniques in under 10 minutes.
Simple Design with Embossed Stamping for Handmade Cards
The Card at a Glance
When I sat down to make this one, I pulled out a simple sketch. A centre band of patterned paper, a crisp label and a single stamped and watercoloured flower. Nothing complicated.
The magic is in the details:
- A heat embossed sentiment that glimmers just enough to feel special.
- Painterly Pears DSP (166146) for that leafy-ish patterned panel.
- A sunny yellow base to echo my greeting and flower (Crushed Curry).
- Simple watercolouring with a brush and three Stampin’ Up! ink pads: Crushed Curry, Cajun Craze, and Cherry Cobbler.
Double Up Your Embossing
1. Black Embossing Outline Flower
Stamp your flower in Versamark ink, sprinkle on black embossing powder and heat to glossy perfection. Pull out your Aquapainter or pointed brush and add a quick watercolour wash with your ink pads, then watch the image POP with gorgeous fall tones.
2. Coloured Ink Embossing
Yes, you can emboss in colour! Ink your greeting first with Versamark ink (this is the KEY) , then tap it into your colour (mine is Crushed Curry). Stamp onto your paper then quickly dust it with clear embossing powder while the ink is still wet. Heat set, and voilà — a glossy golden sentiment that ties back to the cardstock base.

Design Tips for This Layout
- A centre strip of DSP bordered with black instantly frames the middle panel.
- A crisp Basic White die-cut label keeps the sentiment bright and balanced.
- A simple white baker’s twine bow softens the edges and adds texture without fuss.
- Bonus sparkle: a few of iridescent dots in a tone-on-tone colour…because why not?
This sketch is one you’ll want to keep handy. Switch up the patterned paper, flower, or colours and you’ll have endless variations.
How to Make This Idea Your Own
Once you have this clean layout, the possibilities are wide open:
- Try a different flower or leaf image for another season.
- Swap the Crushed Curry base for a softer pastel for spring birthdays.
- Use holiday DSP and a Christmas sentiment for an easy festive card.
