4 tips for How to Make Handmade Cards with Pizzazz
Your cards will get some instant pizzazz when you think about adding these 4 tips:
1.Pick the Right Materials (or Your Card Might Just Look Like a Hot Mess!)
The key to making a gorgeous handmade card is selecting the right materials. Don’t skimp on your cardstock. It should be strong enough for your card to stand up and not slump or fall over! Admittedly it’s hard to know that when you’re just looking at the package on the shelf.
But know that all the SU! cardstock, with the exception of the Regular Basic White and Very Vanilla are ideal for giving you sturdy and amazing “stand-uppedness!”
2. Add Some Dimension (So Your Card Doesn’t Look Like a Flat Pancake)
Give your card some oomph by adding dimension. I’ve added it in a couple ways here.
First, there are two layers of Deckled Rectangles. Even though they’re glued right to the card base, they frame the focal point and add a layer of interest.
Then, don’t forget about how foam dimensionals (also known as pop dots) create layers and add depth to your design.
Here you can see the bouquet is elevated by one level. It adds subtle shading and draws your attention. Exactly what you want your card to achieve!
Your recipient will be impressed and will think you’re a card-making genius!

3. Make It Personal (Because No One Wants a Generic Card)
The best part about making a handmade card is you can personalize it to your heart’s content. Add a handwritten message or a little doodle that’s specific to the recipient. Or, if you’re feeling brave, throw in a photo of the two of you doing something ridiculous. It’ll make them laugh and show them how much you care.
Here, I know my new friend loves any kind of flowers! And I checked and her favourite colours are green and yellow, so I know she’s going to like it! (Yes, even if it’s someone you don’t know very well, just ask and they’ll be so impressed you took the time to make it personal to them!)
4. Keep It Simple (Or Your Card Could Look Like a Circus Tent)
Remember that old saying, “less is more”?
It applies to handmade cards, too.
Resist the urge to add every single embellishment you own. Focus on a few key elements that complement each other and work together. Your card will look elegant, stylish, and even on-trend!
On my design, I added just one little pearl I coloured with my Flirty Flamingo Stampin’ Blends marker. It makes the perfect little door knob!
